NGEI (translates to ‘later in the future’ in Nengone, the language from Maré, Pacific) is a collection of 3 monumental accessories inspired by the Kanak artefacts: the Kanak money, ceremonial spears and magic stones. Those objects were pillars of New Caledonia’s culture and identity. In this collection they take a new form and perpetuate traditions in new ways.

The concept of NGEI is to juxtapose the ancient artefacts next to their futuristic version, open a conversation, re-question the future of customs in farefetch scenarios. Each object contains specific references taken from travellers’ discovery diaries and traditional legends. The pieces then become much more than simple jewelry, they become futuristic artefacts; « charged with symbols that convey our past values and identities into the future. »

CĀC: (‘spear’ in Nengone) is a modernized version of the Kanak spear, in a jewelry form. ‘CĀC’ is inspired by the slender shapes of the Kanak spear; sharp wooden weapons, they were worn and exhibited as prestige weapons and circulated as gifts in customary exchanges. The futuristic spear is a symbolic weapon ‘piercing’ that awakens the warrior spirits within its wearer’s body and soul. It is placed on the forehead and is worn with pride. It is a reminder of force and courage from our ancestors. In the future, the piece would be integrated directly in the skin, like a prosthetic, and become part of the body.

‘CĀC’ is a long and sharp metal tube placed on the forehead (67cm). Small stylized engraved details adorn the ‘CĀC’, representing wrapped fabric, which refers to ceremonial spears that were exchanged in customary ceremonies between tribes.
‘CĀC’ could play a determining role in the formation of new human forms as it becomes an extension of one’s body.
