The KATEM ring is part of the TANEM FUIJA collection and explores the concept of scarification in a far-flung future. The collection is inspired but the ritualistic crocodile like scarifications of Vanuatu. The work describes a series of futuristic rituals with which hypothetical humans protect themselves from the passage of time and attempt to become invincible and immortal. And materialise with 3 monumental looks and a series of tools.
The KATEM is inspired by the look 1 of TANEM FUIJA: PLANEM RUS which is inspired by the planarian, a microscopic flatworm that can regrow body parts and organs. When cut in two, the planarian worm becomes two new worms, making it functionally immortal. KATEM shapes take reference in the inside tail shapes of the monumental look.
KATEM regular stands at 20mm high with 20mm long spikes, while KATEM phallax is 16mm in height with 10mm spikes. Both feature a daring design with sharp extending tails, creating an aggressive and edgy detail that almost resembles a weapon. The name KATEM means "cut" in Bichlamar, a language spoken in Vanuatu.
